This week on the Today show they've been talking about germs -- yesterday it was how nasty grocery carts are and today it was vacuum cleaners. Showed how the brushes and rollers have bacteria and then the bacteria feeds off of the crumbs etc. they find on the floor.
There was a couple with 3 children who vacuumed the floor twice a week. They sent the rollers off to be cultured -- full of e coli, fecal, etc. Family suddenly had new house rules -- no snacking while sitting on the floor watching tv, more handwashing, removing shoes at the door...
They didn't recommend getting rid of the vacuum cleaners or decreasing vacuuming. Did indicate that throw away bags were better than the reusable cups, hepa filters and that there are some vacuums with brush material that have anti-microbe properties to reduce the amount of germs.
Bleah! My vacuum is 14 years old and I've been waiting to get a new one once our addition is finished. I'm picturing the number of times our previous dog scooted across the bedroom floor, ds spitting up and vomiting, people not removing their shoes...
