Ovulation

Hi,
I really need some help. I talked with my RE regarding my irregular periods and the fact that I haven't ovulated per my monitor.

So, I am doing a provera challenge of 10 mg x5 days. I should have withdrawal bleeding from 1-14 days post-med completion. The RE nurse said that if I didn't have a period in 14 days, then I really should have more tests done to see why I am not ovulating.

My questions (after looking online, etc):
1. Does provera "jump-start" the cycle again? So, once I start withdrawal bleeding, is this then just a start of a cycle again? So I would think day 13-14 would be the day of ovulation? I just don't get how provera is going to "reset" my cycles.

2. A lot of sources say that not having periods and then responding to provera, is a sign that the reason for no periods is that the woman is not ovulating. So, if I still have withdrawal bleeding, I probably won't have an egg getting ready to be released on day 13-14? So why would the RE allow me to have a natural cycle with IUI if I may not even be ovulating at all anyways? I would rather take clomid to ovulate than waste money on a transvaginal ultrasound (to see if there is a follicle) or waste money for an IUI.

3. Does the clomid really increase the risk of multiples?

I am baffled as to what is going on in my reproductive system. I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks, Jenn

Well I can't speak directly to your situation, but I'll tell you a bit about my history since we asked a lot of those same questions you're asking.

Up until about 3 years ago my cycle was very irregular, maybe coming every 3 months or so. I went on Ortho Evra for about a year then afterwards my cycles were about 38-40 which is longer than normal but regular. During those three years we tried with no luck. I was charting (taking my temp., checking CM, ect.) and everything was perfectly normal except I never got a positive ovulation test. So even though the birth control regulated my cycle, I still wasn't ovulating.

I finally saw my regular OBG to discuss what was going on and she refused to give me anything and referred me to a RE. 4 medicated IUI's and are now pregnant!

I would probably discourage you from just taking Clomid without being monitored via ultrasound (which at first I was frustrated about because that is what I wanted to try too). It is hard to tell how your body would respond to Clomid whether it would would overstimulate you or (in our case) wouldn't be enough to get you ovulating.

When I went to my first Dr. apt once we're pregnant, I told my Midwife we had gone to an RE and she told me about a patient of hers who asked if she could try Clomid for a couple months before going to a specialist. My midwife said one month on 50mg of Clomid and her patient is now pregnant with 4 babies!!
