Painful Stabbing in the Muscles around the Lungs

Hi Everyone,
Soabout 4 days ago, I had some painful muscle stabbing in the lung area which is normal for me if Ive been coughing alot during physio sometimes. However, its gotten worse up to the point each time i cough it feels like a enormous knife is slicing up my rib cage in the right side and everytime I breathe it hurts. This has lasted almost 4 days and is making me worried because I am unable to do very good physio at all, sometimes not able to do anything, which is bad for me since i NEVER miss physio and my pfts have been low recently. Should I contact my doctor? Its extremely painful and I cant sleep well at all.
I was wondering if other CFers get stabbing pains at all because I do occasionally - just this time its alot worse! I dont know if its just genetics other than CF because my dad gets alot of back pain, which I get also and he doesnt have CF.
Thanks heaps guys! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

You might have cracked a rib, ripped an intercostal muscle, have pleuritis, a pneumo, or heavens knows what.
Either way girl, call your doc and get an x-ray!

*hugs to you*
feel better, pain sucks.

Go to the dr!

I hadn't thought of the things Momto2 mentioned, but she has a really good point. I get frequent chest pain and I just beat on the area and most times it goes away. In my case, they've told me it was most likely air trapped that was swelling the lung and then it touches the lining (which has the nerves in it) and that was what was causing pain. Are you breathing normal? Shallow? SOB?

Hope you figure it out and feel better soon!

It sounds like pleurisy, I had that for about 3 days last March, and it feels exactly like what you're describing. Does taking some ibuprofen help?
Regardless, go see your doctor, pleurisy accompanied pneumonia for me. :/

I have had that once before. Its incredibly painful and it felt even worse when I tried to take a deep breath.
I went to the ER. They did an Xray and found NOTHING. It was a pulled muscle or muscle that had been spasiming. (sp?) It took a few days to get rid of it and there was nothing that helped. It was awful and painful and the only thing that made it go away was time.

Go to the doc straightaway-there's nothing to be scared of. Whats scarier is not going.
This could be pleurisy, a partial collapse, a broken rib...it also sounds like the bad winter virus going around. Either way go and get it treated while its still easy to treat.
Feel better!
