Just teach your kids to wash their hands very well after playing with the animal. I'm sorry but I hate it when other parents (or grandparents who are trying to help but have no clue) say stuff lik that which just causes other parents to freak out. I would double check with your childs CF doctor if you feel insecure about it, but handwashing-with antibacterial, seems the way to go. My husband grew up with rats, hampsters, dogs, and now we have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and he is really healthy for having CF. Just my two cents though,

Hey how are you? just a few words, we have a hamster. Little contact needed with the kids and still able to teach responsibilities for animals. They say cats and dogs, keep out of sleeping area and so forth, toooo much work for us. A ferret, is like a rat/cat, and very dirty. Like washing hands at every contact and avoid any area contacted by the ferret. I think that is for CFers and or regular kids, so choice is yours I suppose. I trust only my daughters pediatrician, so I would ask him and only his input would be valid, for me. But on the other hand, I would love to get my son a cat cause he loves them but my daughter has CF and that over powers his love for cats. I think he will have like 10 when he is grown and on his own. lol
take care ps hope this helps

Just an FYI to the last poster, my husband grew up with a dog and he has CF. She slept on his bed every night-caused him no problems. My husband and I are both allergic to cats (nothing a little allegra and zyrtec can't help though) but we have 2 and they sleep on the bed as often as possible, that is because the dogs (rottweiler and german spitz/rottweiler mix) usually call first dibs on the bed. The ONLY thing my husband has ever cultured is Pseudo. and Staph. His lung functions are at 85% even with recurrent lung infections (about 1 every 3 months). Honestly, we ignore what the doctors say about animals because people had animals LONG before they knew what CF was or how to treat it and what those wiht CF should avoid.

Of course there are those who are sensitive to animals regardless of a CF diagnosis or not, but I just wanted to put that information out there.

I have a family friend with ferrets and as long as you keep the cage or whatever clean they are pretty clean themselves. I recently heard a story on the news the news about pocket pets (hamsters, mice, other small animals) that can carry salmonela but as long as you keep the cage clean and wash your hands well after handling them you'll be ok. I think animals are great for kids to learn to care about other creatures and respnsibility. I always had pets growing up and one cat practically lived on my bed. My current kitty sleeps on my bed all the time too and I've never had problems. My boyfriend is slightly allergic to cats but the more he's around the cat and his hair the less his allergy bothers him.

I grew up with as many as 6 dogs in my house at a time. I've had hamsters, a guinea pig, fish, birds, dogs, and cats. My doc has always known about this and never gave it a second thought. Pets are too fun to ignore completely. When I move out, I'm going to get a Newf. Mwahahaha.
