Hi, I posted this before and then everything changed on the site. Here it is again. My daughter, 6 yrs old, just came out of the hospital for a 21 day round of iv tobramyacin, and timentin. In Oct. her fev1 was 93% On Feb 10th they were 66%. Thats the day she she was admitted. One week later her fev1 was 76% then a week later 85%. Now we went home on the iv's. Went back one week later and the fev1 was back down to 73%. She is now on a 30 day dose of Keflex 1500 mg daily. We also received the vest last week. My question is: has any one had numbers like these and had them come back up after the oral antibiotics? Also, any tricks on how to get her to breath the Tobi and Pulmozyme through her mouth, not her nose, with out nose clips? Thanks, Michelle e-mail @ dare2write101@yahoo.com

The fluctuation in PFT results might not be from infection. It could be allergy/inflammation/enviromental. If any infection is under control & if she is taking antibiotics that are working for that infection, but her levels are still up/down, I would look in a different direction. For me (I will be 35 tomorrow) I found that quite often it is variable of other things. From having my period to not eating the right things to have enough energy to give a good test. Sometimes my airways are just tight & I need an inhaler. I have been on Advair for about 1 1/2 years now. This is the first time I ever had to use any type of steroid, but it works. I had to learn that "preventive" methods with it are better than trying to "fix" a problem quickly. You would be surprised at the different things that could trigger a drop in PFT's. Just think about irritants in the air around us. Some people have no problems while others feel it instantly. Keep notes of what takes place when there is a drop or increase in the PFT & maybe you will find the link. Good Luck! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
I know my son has a harder time after being out in the cold air. Where any of the recent poor tests done after being outside recently? Also as far as inhaling the pulmozyme and the TOBI through the mouth without nose clips; the trick with our son is to make sure his lips are closed around the neb mouthpiece. If not, he know we will have to use a mask and he hates that. Also, do you use a pari neb? They really have to inhale to get the medicine to come out and they don't waste much. Hope this helps.Jo Ann
Hello, My daughter Jaycee is 5 years old. Her PFT's are normally at 100% or above, there was one time when she dropped to 76%. Her doctor didn't hospitalize her on that alone because sometimes at this age it's hard sometimes to get a reading you can go by. He said that her PFT's could drop due to weather outside, if her allergies are acting up, and if she doesn't do it correctly. When Jaycee does her PFT's she has to be standing and she puts everything she has into them. He said at her age for me not to get upset if she has a drop in her level, however if it stays down then that's when to worry. After she had that low of a reading he did send her home on an oral antibiotic and when we took her back she was back into the 90's. I hope I helped some. Melissa
Hi, Last summer my 8 yr. old daughter was in for a clean out and she had very low pft's and ended up having a fungus in her lungs ( aspergillis ) spelling may be wrong. I guess this is fairly common for people with CF to colonize in their lungs.They treated it with sporanox ( pill form) she is still taking it about 9 months later. It's a very long course of treatment but she is doing well and her pft's have improved. Good Luck!!Susan
Hi, im a 17 yo with cf and just recently went in to have my regular appointment. when i got my PFT numbers, my FEV1 was down to an all-time low of 39%. all the doctors wanted me to be admitted right away but i told them no because i felt good. earlier in the year my numbers were 43 so i was admitted. after taking the iv antibiotics as well as the oral for a month, my numbers went up to 49, and all that was happening while i felt like crap. the way i see it, is that the numbers only mean that your not a professional at breathing into a machine, so don't be alarmed when your numbers are jumping around from high to low.
