Hello,
My son is almost 1 years old and was diagnosed with CF through the NB screening. My husband and I are both carriers and were not aware. We are starting to look into PGD/IVF but as is expecnsive. I have heard that some insurances will cover this cost because they rather pay for the procedure rather that pay for coverage for a child with CF. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this? Also, any advise from someone who went through this?

From what I understand, some people have sent a letter to their insurance provider outlining the cost of caring for a CF child vs. IVF/PGD. I have not tried to do it because I called my insurance company asking where to send a letter appealing for coverage and they told me that there are no exceptions made by my husband's employer (they decide what is covered).

My husband and I are about to do IVF in January. He has CF and I am not a carrier, so we are not doing PGD.

Have you heard of INCIID? It is an IVF scholarship program that you can apply for. You have to be willing to be photographed, etc. if you are awarded the scholarship. My husband and I decided to not apply since we are more private about the IVF process, but for those who don't mind being photographed, etc. it may be a great thing to look into! Here is the link:

Good luck with everything. I wish insurance companies were more understanding.

Hi. I am a genetic counselor and also have CF. To my knowledge, no insurance companies cover the cost of the preimplantation genetic diagnosis. They may pay for the IVF portion of the procedure, however. Best of luck!
