Hey,

im just wondering, since Ive been thru many of the topics on here and havent seen it (unless its really far down...or me being half blind), I am wondering how you men and women are doing physically. How do you cope with exercise? Can you run for a long time? PLay sports? Work out? and so on. I am wondering this because at my clinic, most people are fairly sick, some not so sick, but even if they are well, not many of them do exercise frequently. Therefore, I have no one to compare myself to. I play basketball and can jog....ummm....I dont know, 15-20 minutes straight about, at a decent pace, but then wanna pass out!! hahaha. Anyways, I was just wondering, how people with CF are coping with exercise and all. My theory is, that once my semester in university is over (in 1 month), I will work out everyday to eventually be able to run ...I dont know....maybe 1 hour would be nice. My doctors say its "possible", I want to know if anyone here is in good enough shape to do it. Thanks!

Exercise is the key to survival. You can not stop, you have to be consistenet and also do weight training. I have found it is now part of my dalily routine. It makes me feel better and stronger. I believe it is the reason why I can get back to my baseline, every single time I get really sick and in the hospital. I work out 5 days a week. 1/2 hour to 45 minutes cardio, mostly on an eliptical and then 1/2 hour of weight training. When your body is strong it helps you fight when you are sick and helps you get back to your usual self. My PFT's are in the low 70% tile and I do an tune up once a year right before the winter to gear up for all the winter colds and flus. I firmly believe in exercise and even if I do not feel the greatest I always just do the best I can, a little goes a long way! Keep up the exercise routine!!!

Chasing after a 20 pound baby is a workout!

I routinely exercise, I try to go 5 days a week but am not always successful. When healthy I can jog for a half an hour or more(3-5 miles), around IV time 1 mile seems like an eternity. I always use weight training as part of my regimen. I quit lifting heavy because I began to cough up large amounts of blood afterwards, so now I use moderate weights with high reps. I agree with Jennifer, staying active is the key to survival. I play as much basketball as possible, even though my lungs aren't quite as good as they once were I can still run with the best of them. I can't talk trash like I used to, not enough wind...but at least I can run!

I used to exercise all the time when I was really healthy and my PFT's were like 85%. But now my PFT's are about 25% and I find it very hard to even walk for a long period of time. I am going to start excercising a little bit just to keep healthy but I find it very difficult now.

I believe in doing the best that you can. If you can only walk to the mailbox and back then do that but do it EVERYDAY. Listen to your body also. Sometimes if I had a bad night of coughing and I am tired I will take a day off and not go and workout. You can not push yourself to the brink, just stay within yourself!
