Sometimes my piccs would bother me, I would get soemthing called phlebitis where vein would get irritated and it woudl cause my arm to ache. I found that it helped to lift nothing heavy, no grocery shopping etc, I have a stick shift so I traded vehicles with hubby to use automatic, just all little things I would try to not do so as to reduce irritation. Maybe by being ultra aware of it you are keeping your arm stiff and hurting shoulder?

The site never bled for me so I dont know if that is normal. If you mean you are having a bit of blood in the tubing that is called a 'flashback' and you can stop it by using the clamp that comes on the tubing and closing it once you are done.

Did you happen to have stitches put in to secure it in place? The two times I had stitches my arm hurt for weeks.

I now refuse them. I also hurt if I overdue with the arm. Remember that you have a foreign object in there so its normal to hurt for a bit.

My last picc bled a lot for some reason. It was really gross & a pain, but my current one & all the others were fine.

Definitely inquired about it.

I hated PICC lines. They always gave me trouble. I had phlebitis, like mom2lillian said. I have to give up on them because I had such horrendous phlebitis no matter what they did.

My best advice in the meantime... try a warm compress on the arm. It softens everything, makes the veins expand some, relaxes the muscles, that sort of stuff.

Occasionally mine will be really sore for about 3-4 days but it goes away as long as I keep it moving and don't let it get stiff. That's an important thing. It might hurt to move it around but it will help a lot as long as it is just normal soreness from being put in. If you prefer IVs over PICC lines though it should be your choice and you can stick with a regular IV next time. With the antibiotics us CFers have to get, they are extremely rough on normal veins however and you might eventually have practically "unstickable" veins. Normally PICC lines are a breeze and shouldn't be a problem at all, so I'd at least try it one more time before you decide you hate them. Hope everything works out!
