PICC lines?

Hi just wondered about PICC lines. I had a few when I was younger, don't remember them much. In the end they no longer worked for me as my veins were too difficult to thread through so had to get a neck line and then ports after that.

Anyway do they hurt much? What are they like (feel and senstaion) wise compared to normal little lines? Is it painful to have them inserted?

Thanks in advance <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have had two PICC's and in my experience it was not painful to have put in. I'm sure it's done differently from when you had them done when you were younger - they used ultrasound to guide them and it took about 5-10 min. to get it done! Didn't feel a thing.

I didn't feel anything different with it in me, but I know some have problems. My main problem was the skin around the site would get very itchy. It wasn't the bandage, but possibly the solution used.

Are you thinking you might be getting one again?

I have had a few PICC lines in and I love them so much more than regular lines. They don't hurt going in for me, they numb the area and use ultrasound (like Debbi said) to guide it to the right spot. After a week or so my arm does get a little sore at the insertion site and I get really itchy from dryness. But other than that I haven't had any real problems. It beats getting poked every 2 days for a regular line!

I have had good experience & rough experiences. When they hit a nerve that is next to the vein I want to jump off the table in pain. That will leave my arm sore for a few days often requiring Motrin to take the inflammation down.

I also get lidacaine shots instead of the cream & the area that the shots were received is often sore.

If everything goes smoothly its not painful at all.
