Hello.

Well, here's the deal. DH just deployed this week. Its been a tough tough week. Not only am I just getting over a cold, but my sinuses are starting to get super runny again, so I'm wondering if I'm not getting it BACK.

But, here's some other things... Since DH left I've had the worst reflux I've ever had. And, I'm hardly eating. I have no appetite. Its clear that part is due to the stress and the unconscious stuff my mind is trying to deal with. However can you get severe reflux from stress?

Also, with the reflux I have been coughing up tons of gunk and have severe coughing attacks. I cough so hard my back hurts. I always feel like I just have phlegm sitting in my throat and the only way to even budge it is to huff cough (which almost kills me) and then coughing until I pee. Its ugly.

The thing is, other than being physcially exhausted and emotionally drained, I don't feel sick (like infection IV sick)... I have NEVER felt like this before. I go to the gym and feel energetic enough about it, but when I get there I can only squeak out a couple minutes' run without feeling like something is crawling up my throat. Its terrible.

I'm taking my prevacid like I should twice a day and still have to take tums about 2-3 times a day. Yikes. And even those only give limited relief.

So, does anyone know if stress can do this to a body? How has your body reacted to severe stress? I tried taking a bath tonight but just laying there hacked up a lung and felt reflux the entire time. So, even when I try to relax I can't relax.

Please let me know if you've experienced anything like this OR if you know anything about what stress can do to our bodies.

I'm worrying myself even more with thoughts of all the terrible things this could be.... Urgh.

Thanks,

In a word: Yes.

Stress can do shocking things to our bodies, including not only making you feel sick, but lowering your body's resistance until you actually get sick.

So for the moment, just accept that there is not much you can do, try to take it one day at a time and watch for signs that it might be progessing and need treated.

I have this with nerves more then stress. If there is such a difference LOL! Stress can take its toll on you tho even when you think that you are fine.

Roll with the punches & take extra good care of yourself while you deal with things.

Your husband leaving is a big change to your physical environment. We all carry millions of micro-organisms, and cannot even digest our food without them. He also undoubtedly took a bunch of gear with him (my ex was career military -- I did the military wife thing for a long time). Whenever we throw out or get rid of a lot of things, my two sons and I all have a crisis because of the change in our environment. I sometimes have very bad heartburn at such times.

Taking guaifenisen sometimes helps me with that. I have asked around and I don't think doctors really know how gauifenisen works, but it is used as a treatment for ..um..fibromyalgia (I think) because it helps remove something from the body. They don't know what it helps remove and they don't know why it helps remove it. I find that when I have a big purging crisis, I get really bad heartburn (preceded by really bad sinus pain) and sometimes actually throw up. A low dose of guaifenisen sometimes helps with that. I guess it helps my body get rid of whatever this gunk is. I get the off-brands of guaifenisen because I don't tolerate the dyes and stuff very well that you find in Mucinex and in the prescription I stuff I used to take.

Good luck with this.
