I am 16 and I have a 15 y/o brother. We both have CF and would like to get a vest. The problem is our insurance won't cover it. We cannot afford one either. I have read about people who are getting to wear the vest for free. If anyone has any information on it please contact me about it. My e-mail address is jakzgurl04@yahoo.com.

I would suggest you call the local United Way, Make a Wish, Rainbows United, Children's Miracle Network, etc to see if they could help. Or ask your social worker at the CF Clinic you go to, they should have some ideas for you. Good Luck

I wouldn't say waste your wish on a Vest. First of all, not everyone likes them. I know it works for a lot of people, but I personally hated it. Plus, your wish can be used for much more fun stuff. As far as going to get a Vest... My insurance wouldn't cover mine either when I had it, but the Vest company is trying to get the word out and to get insurance companies to cover it, so they were very helpful. The Vest company allowed me to have it in the house completely free of charge as they were trying to fight my insurance company to cover it. I would say go to the company that actually produces the Vest and talk to them about getting one in your home for a trial run or what have you.

When I got my vest, the vest company haggled with our insurance for over a year, but our insurance wouldn't cover it either. After the final denial from our insurance, I simply had to request a waiver form from the vest company. It basically stated that there eas no way I could come up with the $16,000 that it cost. After I signed and returned that, they called to tell me that the fee had been waived and that on the condition that I used it X amount (verifiable by the counter on the bottom of the machine that records hours of usage) it would be left in my home indefinitely. That said, first thing I would do is contact to vest company and explain your situation. They were very helpful for us. I've really enjoyed my vest because it has allowed me to take full responsibility for my care. I am no longer dependant on someone else's convenience. It was great especially when I got married and now that I'm a mom. I plug in, put on a 30 minute video for my daughter (her sole TV allowance for the day) and grab my Bible for some uninterrupted study time. So, my 30 minutes on the vest (as opposed to 60 minutes before in a multitude of uncomfortable positions) is something we both look forward to. HollyCatheryn
