Please provide some information

Hi

I have a son who will be 5 in August. He has had sinus problems for the past tow years. He also has seasonal allergies. The thought of CF has crossed my mind after reading about sinus problems and CF on the internet. He had a cat scan of his sinuses that showed opacification of his right maxillary sinus and some thickening in his left sinus. Tonight we took him and his sister to Chuckie Cheese as our special adventure. After playing for a couple of hours in the tunnels he was sweaty. As a nervous mom, i I kissed his hairline and yes than licked it to find it salty tasting. I know that you lose salt in sweat and honestly I have never licked anybody before to find out if they would be just as salty tasting. He has no other symptoms listed on the internet. I am making myself sick over this as everyone seems to think the sinuses are a result of the allergies. I cry when I watch him sleep. Does anyone feel I should have him tested? I had a blood test on Wednesday to see if I am a carrier but so far no results. Thanks

Hi Wendy, All kids are salty when they sweat. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> My baby who has CF is salty all the time, playing, sleeping, she always tastes like the ocean. So I wouldn't worry. I would get your son tested anyway. Don't make yourself sick over it, and keep in mind that CF is relatively rare - only 1 in 3500. But you'll feel better and it couldn't hurt. It's always good to rule it out.

Please make sure you are getting a <b> full panel </b> CF genetic test.... some CF panels only test for the most common genes, which is pretty pointless in my opinion.

Ditto to Sakasuka -- full panel (over 1500 mutations tested for)

Don't be surprised if your doctor wants to start with a sweat test first -- they almost always want to do that, you will not be able to talk them out of it -- but you should be able to talk them into full genetic testing if you have the right doctor and or if you push hard enough -- if your doctor won't do it, keep looking for someone who will.

I agree with froggymama too about not getting too worried yet. It could just be "normal" sinus problems, not CF sinus problems -- but you should follow up with testing just to rule it out for sure.
