Popcorn Lung???

Hi Everyone,

Lately my six year old and two year old have discovered popcorn, and love to eat it at night as a snack. I heard on the news about a new lung disorder called popcorn lung which is caused by a chemical called diacetyl in microwave butter popcorn - somehow it can block the small airwaves or bronchials with scar tissue and inflammation. Common sense tells me to stop the buttered popcorn and just buy the regular popcorn and maybe add some butter on my own. I'll ask our doctor at our next appointment what they think, but I just thought maybe it was something that everyone should be aware of, just in case it could cause more problems in our little ones lungs. Anyone else hear anything about it, or maybe already contacted their doctor with questions?

i was wondering why the commerical for orviell redenbocker (however you spell it) said that it now doesnt have that stuff in it. interesting. maybe you can start using orviell. i just bought a box of mini bags, now i'm gonna have to go check since my curosity is peaked. you could also go buy a popcorn popper. i have one and i love it. i think it taste so much better than bagged popcorn. it's an air popper, all you do is buy popcorn kernels, plug in the popper, pour in the kernels and it pops the popcorn. you do have to add your own butter. so you can add how ever little or how ever much you want (i always tend to add more than i should) there is an actual popcorn butter that you can use that they sell that is by the kernels, but i think actual butter taste better. and there is also popcorn salt you can buy. it's just super fine salt. but that may be something you could look into if you are uneasy about buying the bagged popcorn anymore.

Popcorn lung stems more from an occupational exposure by working in the the plant that manufactures it. I guess it is remotely possible to "get it" from just eating it. Just to be safe I would just not let him be around when you open the bag when the steam comes off. Again, I haven't researched to get the specifics but since it is an airborn exposure issue I don't see the rick of ingesting it.

I seem to recall that the majority of the people affected were popcorn plant workers. There was also an individual who had it because he LOVED the smell of microwave popcorn, he would fix several bags of it through out the day, just so he could open up the bag and smell it.

We still fix microwave popcorn. Usually just a few times a week. Had some cheesy popcorn last night <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
