port with drawing blood

I am using a 22 guage needle and it keeps stopping up when they try to get blood. So they reaccess and it works fine for couple ml then does it again will a 20 guage help this?

seems to as when u reaccess it works fine the top of needle seems to be getting the clot when it stops nothing with push thru it in or out what guage is normally used for blood draws

However, when giving blood, the standard at most hospitals is an 18g; 20g at the smallest.

Given that you are using a port rather than your veins, I'd switch to a 20g and see if that resolves the issue.

On a side note, if you are clotting this easily, make sure that your port is getting flushed well after use or you may experience issues with the port (big bummer).
