Portal Hypertension

My 8 year old son was diagnosed this week with Portal Hypertension. His liver enzymes have been normal but they could see it on the ultrasound. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

I have portal hyptertension. I was about 12 when I was diagnosed with it. I take Ursodiol or Actigall twice a day to help things keep flowing through my liver.

My son has it as well (7 almost 8).

It is a sign of damage to the liver or spleen normally. This is a known complication with CF, and one that is normally managed with meds as bethylove mentioned.

If you have specific questions, fire away and I'll see what I can do for answers.

I've had portal hypertension since I was about 14 and now I'm 21. It's because I have liver cirrhosis so the blood doesn't flow properly through the liver. It's caused my spleen to become very enlarged and my liver is also bigger than normal. The spleen is not a problem, just annoying. But with the hypertension, your son may have to have yearly endoscopies done to make sure there are no bleeds in his esophogus. I know way too much about the liver haha. So if you have questions, feel free to ask me. As long as you keep on top of things, the hypertension shouldn't be too big of a deal.
