Ports

I've been thinking about asking my doctor about getting a port put in because I seem to be going on IV antibiotics rather frequently and am getting tired of all the picc lines and pokes. I was wondering how you get a port put in and how much it hurt and any other information about them.

A easey surgery, they just made me feel good, and then it was done. Lifting heavy stuff hurt for a month, but after that no problems. get one. It makes getting IVs so much easyer.

Hello...I have had my port over a year now and wouldn't trade it for anything. Like you, I was being PICC'ed frequently, sometimes every other month and my arms and veins were really suffering. I was also getting frequent infections related to my PICC's, in my blood, despite meticulous care. Getting the port really wasn't tough...I was put under (had a trach revision done at the same time, why separate the surgeries if they can be done at the same time? I woke up a little sore with my port accessed. I have had no infections related to my port thus far, yes I did have a clotting issue but that was fixed with clot busters. My port is fully functional and gives up blood now so I am one happy camper. Mine is located on my right upper chest, it bumps out a little, not that noticable. The thing is, you can tell the surgeon where you would prefer to have your port. I didn't care, actually Iam happy where it is. It doesn't take long to heal either. After awhile, I just don't feel the needles going in, probably because of the scar tissue. My port has been used extensively in this short period of time. As for how long they last, it varies. I know of people who have had theirs for a decade! Some have problems and need them replaced either because of infection or just non functional. Hopefully, I wll be one of those who won't need a new port for some time. I hope I have helped. Good luck...I never regretted my decision. Hugs, Jenn

Same here, love my port.

Have had it for 6 years and it is well worth getting. I can play hockey, tennis, basketball. You name it I can do everything with the port as long as the needle isn't attached.

Great to have and very convenient.

I have another ??? on ports (excuse the hijacking). IF you have to have it replaced (for whatever reason), do you need to go to a completely different area or has it been able to be inserted in the same general area? And if you have certain problems on one side of your body (such as my current shoulder problem & left muscular issues that affect my airways), has it been recommended not to aggrivate things more by placing the port at that side? I dont know if anyone can answer the second ?? unless it is somehow related to the first LOL!

I can recommend the port as well. I have had mine for 1 1/2
yrs and it has made doing IV treatment so much easier. No
outpatient procedures to get a picc line-less stressful overall
when I have to do IV's. If you need more info, feel free to
private message me.
