Possible CF? What do you think?

Hi!

I have two kids neither diagnosed with CF. We opted not to do the genetic testing when I was pregnant because of all the false positive stories, and the fact that neither of us has a history of CF.

Both kids seem fine and healthy (2 years and the other 2 months). But a few weeks ago, my husband went in for a vasectomy and the doctor was unable to perform the surgery because he couldn't find one of the vas. After a second, very invasive procedure, he confirmed that my husband only had one - very rare. After pouring through as many articles as I could, the only thing I could find is that this condition has been linked to CF.

My husband went for an ultrasound, and found that he only has one kidney (apparently also linked?). I discussed CF testing with my children's pediatrician, but he felt that doing a sweat test before 6 months would more than likely give us a false result and it was best to wait. Both kids seem fine and don't seem to be presenting any symptoms (I have been caught licking my baby a lot lately!), but I am still concerned. Any insight or information would be VERY helpful!

Well, your pediatrician is wrong -- many babies are sweat tested long before 6 months. I believe that in the first few days of life you can get a weird result, but beyond that sweats are done all the time.

However, I'm not sure that testing is all that necessary yet. Obviously your husband did not completely lack the vas deferens and you were able to conceive. But if I were in your shoes, I'd think I'd get your husband tested first in this case. Since your kids show no reason to be tested, you can see with your husband first and then consider testing if his results show concern.
