I was wondering if anyone has any input on potty training for a cfer who has 6 BM's a day????? My daugher who doesn't have cf was pretty simple, but I worry about my little guy learning. He is 2 so I know we have a little time yet and I don't want to push it but thought I would ask for advice before we jump into this one! He tells me he wants to go "potty trainin" which I don't know where he picked that one up since I stay home with him for the time being. So funny for now...

6 BMS a day.? You may want to check with your pulmonologists about increasing his enzymes. Anyway.. My Son was pretty easy...He was 3 before he was potty trained.. Doing #1 was no problem, but for a few months, he always wanted to be put into a diaper to do #2. Eventually he caught on.. He still wears pullups at night incase he has an accident...

my son was hard to potty train because he's always had a problem with rectal prolapse.. the first time we ever got him to poop on the potty he had a prolapse and he was tramatized.... but i let some time pass and i didnt push him til one day he woke up and hes been goin on the potty ever since.. we just use pullups at night.. he still has the prolapse problem but its not so tramatizing anymore... id just wait a while until your child is ready... dont push too hard is my advice....

I think a good number of us had trouble potty training. It's hard to control when it's so abnormal. I don't have any advice, just wanted to say that if he's late doing it, it's not unusual and it's not really a bad thing. It's a nuisance, I imagine, but it just takes us a little longer to figure it out. So if he's late doing it, don't be surprised, and don't freak out. Just give him some extra time to get used to it.

Thanks. Yes he does have up to 6 a day. The last two days we were blessed with only 2-3 per day. They also just put him on actigol for his liver and I was hoping that would help a bit. We actually go in tomorrow again but they...the drs don't seem too concerned with the number of bm's. I am in NO hurry to potty train yet. But it's starting to be the topic of conversation among us parents with kids in that age group. I didn't want to rush...just thoughts I'd see what others have experienced.

Happy New Year to you all. I can't wait to start clean with a new year!

I just found out My daughter has cf She's going to be 5 this month. I just got her potty trained due to the fact she had no bowel control and some times still doesn't. My two son's were also tested because she was positive, and tested positive as well. I hope I don't have as many issues with my 3yr old as I did with her.

My son was 4 1/2 years old when he got potty trained. we just put him on the potty and sat him backwards and gave him some toys to play with on the tank of the toilet. My son was going 7-8 or more times a day. it took alot of patience and lots of diapers to get him potty trained. I thought he was going to go to kindergarden in diapers. He will when he gets more control of the urge to go..I hope that helps

My son had frequent BM's throughout the day (most were small). When he became potty trained, they turned into 1-2 BM's a day. For us, the potty training was a good thing...much easier afterward. Make sure he does it on his own time, though. Things will be much harder if you push it too soon. Good luck!

My son is four and a half with CF. He learned to pee in the potty with no problem by the time he was three, pooping was another story. It took at least six or seven months till he was completly trained. He had about 6 BMs a day like your son, and they were very bulky and greasy. we increased his enzymes and that helped a lot, but he still had trouble relaxing enough to go on the potty. We tried bribing him (yes I admit it) but that was not the answer. He finally got the hang of it once we decided not to pressure him so much. However, once in a while he actually gets constipated so bad that he'll scream on the potty, break out in a sweat and strain so hard that little blood vessels pop all over his little face!
The best advice I have to give is to be patient, buy lots of cheap underwear (if the BM is too nasty to clean up, just toss them--they are cheaper than diapers and wipes), Let him run around the house wearing nothing or just underwear, make the bathroom fun, I put his training potty downstairs in the playroom so he could as soon as he got the urge and not interrupt his play. Don't worry-he'll learn eventually!!!!!
