Potty Training with a G-tube

Our son gets 16 oz overnight through his G-tube and is having a hard time "holding" it until morning. He is upset that I started putting diapers on him at night again after we discussed that he is a big boy and "No more diapers!". I feel so bad for him. Any advice or stories? Is this just another hurdle of growing up or will it be a long-term G-tube issue?

Thanks!
DS has amazing bladder capacity; however, when he was in the hospital a couple years ago due to a bowel obstruction, he had to use them as well and he was 6 at the time. We also kept a portable "john" in the bathroom, so he could pee into the jug.

Realize you're probably lacking sleep already, but could you set the alarm and walk him to the bathroom at 2 am? We've done this if DS has fallen asleep right after school and has slept thru the night.

We trained my daughter while she had a g-tube and she did fine. She has never wet the bed once despite the night feeds. But that doesn't mean it isn't the reason for your son's issues, every kid is different. If he's just 2 and has a tube, then I'd think pull ups or some other thing makes perfect sense until his body is mature enough to manage this.

I know he got the tube pretty recently- had he been dry all night prior to night feeds? If it is a new thing, he may gradually adjust to the extra liquids at night and eventually do ok with it. At 2 he's still an age where his body is just starting to mature in this area anyway and MANY kids are not staying dry at night. At any rate, his reaction suggests he's really sensitive to it so maybe pullups or something that look less like a diaper may make him feel better about it? (I know they are a little more expensive but maybe worth it if nighttime is all he needs them for.) Hopefully it resolves soon with a little growth and maturity.

Thanks for the suggestions! Yes, I considered the pull-ups...I didn't get them because they are double the price of diapers, but I'm regretting that decision! I think I will get them next time...I'll just have to clip coupons!

He got the tube 5 months ago, when he was 19 months old. He was not staying dry through the night at that time. These days he stays dry all day (including a 2-3 hour nap). On the rare night that he doesn't get a tube feeding, he stays dry or just a small amount of pee. Mornings after a tube-feeding, the diaper is sopping wet!

Some nights, he does wake up on his own and wants to go potty. But he is very tired and whiny...it is not pleasant. I'm also very worried about him getting up and trying to get to the bathroom on his own while being hooked up. One time he got out of bed and the entire pole tipped over!

I've considered putting the little potty chair in his room, next to his bed. He could get up at night, sit on the potty, then go back to bed. But, I think he is too young to understand how to do that.

It's nice to know that other kids have learned to "hold" the entire tube-feeding. Thanks for the encouragement!

g-tube out of the picture, boys are hard to night train. Both my boys couldn't stay dry every night until nearly 6 years of age. If he's dry during the day you are way ahead of the game. It will all come together. Give it time.
Just wanted to reply because I am also potty training our 2 yr. old twin boys one with CF (no g-tube) one without. I use the off name brand of pull ups from Wal-mart Whitecloud 52 for $16.97. I tried the Huggies brand but they have elastic sides and my boys figured out in 2.2 seconds that they could run naked so besides the high price I hated them. You also sound like he is doing alot better than mine so great job!! Maybe since you have to pull them up he won't feel like it's a "diaper" and they hold alot.
