The first baby has been born in Ireland where a technique called Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), was applied to screen embryos from the mother for suspected genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis. After screening, the identified healthy embryo is then implanted back into the mother’s uterus and allowed to develop. PGD is a technique costing 9,800 EURO in Ireland and is being introduced in other countries like the US. PGD allows couples at risk of a specific inherited condition to avoid passing it on to their children. It maybe an important consideration for adults at risk of bearing a child with CF.

The image below describes the procedure.

What do you think?
Is this a potential cure for future generations?
Do you think this is ethical?
