pre-schoolers digestive issues

First, sorry for the TMI aspect of this post, but it's the only way I know to explain what's been going on.....

My son is 3 and half. About four weeks ago, he began experiencing periods of upset stomach during the night. He has these episodes 2-3 times per week. He will wake up in the middle of the night, and vomit about 4-5 times over a two hour or so period of time. He'll then go back to sleep, and wakes up happy, normal behavior, no more upset stomach. He does not run fever when he has these episodes, he does not have any other symptoms at these times. We can't see any correlation between what he eats during the day, or how much he eats/drinks and these episodes. He takes both Zantac and omeprazole for reflux and has since infancy. He is pancreatic insufficient and takes enzymes consistently with all meals and snacks. Our CF clinic first suggested this was a constipation/partial obstruction issue and we cleaned him out with laxatives per their instructions, but that has not changed anything. Any ideas out there? Anyone else experience this?

What about acute pancreatitis as a possibility? My son was just hospitalized for this and while vomiting is common, not always present. Is he in pain?? Would get an X-ray to see if anything suspicious for bowel obstruction (partial or otherwise). Bloodwork could look at his blood amylase/lipase which would be elevated in acute pancreatitis. If he's not in pain, maybe just the flu or a GI bug.

Is he on maintenance doses of Miralax? Our son vomitted frequently when he had a build-up and after one hospitalization for DIOS, he continued to build up even with maintenance doses--he's system needs just the right amount and sometimes "cleared out" is really "going around." I'd suggest an Xray to see if he is FOS (full of stool), especially if he wasn't on a maintanence dose. And also request a referal to GI. Hugs mom.
