Precautions at clinic

I just posted a few days ago about the do' s and don't with cf and several people mentioned clinic check-up's being the most dangerous place. We have an appointment in a couple of days. I usually try to have our 20 month old wear a mask, and make sure she purells her hands often. I have also taken the hospital grade antibacterial wipes to clean everything that is her height in the room. Are there some other things that can be done? About six months ago after a visit she became sick with PA, could be bad timing or.... anyway I know that our clinic does the best they can to clean and have air purifiers that clear the air several times a hour but still we are doing so well now I dread going into a potentially dangerous place for her. If any of you have any tips I would greatly appreciate it. Also, what kind of mask is the best for really keeping out germs and where do you get them? Tiffany

It sounds to me like you're doing all you can. I try to bring a few of my son's toys and not let him play with the ones in the waiting room, Purell, some wiping down the room, and not letting him touch things like doorknobs and elevator buttons. We don't even use a mask, but we never really wait long in the waiting room either.

For me, I don't sit in the waiting room (fortunately, the whole center of the building's floor is the waiting area for all the clinics- like a half circle with the clinics around the outside) and I go stand at the railing that looks down to the 1st floor windows. I use my handsanitizer like it's going out of style, avoid everyone I possibly can at at least 4 ft., and clean the table in the room with the hospital wipes, and then wash and wash and hand sanitize again . I try to avoid the magazines (but if I'm really bored, I wash and hand sanitize afterwards- again). Basically, I become a complete germaphobe . Oh, and I have a mask that I keep in a zipper pouch in my purse (at all times) just in case I feel I need it...

Our clinic no longer has a waiting room. At check-in, a nurse immediately brings you to a room to fill out papers. Weights, PFTs, exams, bloodwork all get done there.

In between appointments the rooms get cleaned thoroughly. There is a cleaning woman on staff who does the rooms but also wipes floors, seats, doorknobs, counters, bathrooms, elevator buttons and everything else!

We feel like they are really on top of the germ thing! BUT, we also are very careful and use wipes and purell too.

Our boys are older so its easier to get them to cooperate. When they were toddlers it would have been very difficult to contain them. We used to wipe down the exam table, then allow the kids to draw on the paper sheet with markers. Later we played hangman or tic tac toe on it.

I get more worried about the doorknobs, the elevator buttons, the handrails in the hallways, bathrooms etc. I never used to think of these things. You should see me trying to get up/down the stairs to the trains without holding on if I dont have a jacket or glovve to cover my hand. HAHAH Seriously tho I dont have to wait for a room at my clinic & they are good about scheduling so there isnt people waiting. I have never worn a mask & refuse to. I am not totally germaphobic so I am sure I am more lax then many would be.

I wear a mask too but its not a regular one. If I am going to wear one I want it to at least be fun. I think these are great and I think kids would love them!!!
