Prednisone (steroids) during pregnancy

I am 21 weeks pregnant and my doctor put me on Prednisone for inflammation. It is not for the baby, something that is sometimes right before delivery to develop the baby's lungs. Has anyone been on Prednisone or another steroid while pregnant for inflammation? And does only four days seem right? I have been on the steroid for two days and my FEV1 hasn't changed.

Jeana,
We do 5 day steroid bursts for inflammation. Anything longer than 5 days, I would be very cautious about... if you do have to be on steroids for longer, make sure they taper the dose down. It can cause adrenal gland suppression by mimicking adrenal gland functioning. So if on longer than 5 days and then the steroids are discontinued suddenly, your body can't produce the steroid hormone (primarily cortisol) fast enough. Then that's called an adrenal crisis and can be detrimental, even fatal.

I would give the steroids a couple more days to take effect. Usually you should start feeling better clinically before seeing number changes. I'd focus more on how you feel than what the numbers say.

Good luck. Feel free to ask any other questions.
