Prednisone

I was advice by CF nurse to take prednisone for 3 days to deal with upper respiratory junk I developed a few days ago. I have painful lung inflammation.

What side effects should I expect?? I have CFRD (low blood sugars more than I would like).

Increased blood sugar levels, some people get really really hungry. I know my daughter did and actually gained some weight with it.

Prednisone does have a lot of side effects, but I would just look out for your sugar and just not feeling right or different in a bad way. Otherwise you are not taking it long enough.

6 hours into my prednisone.... doing well. Blood sugars are doing fine. We will see how tonight and tomorrow goes. I can cough and not wince in pain. Still waiting for a cough spasm.... will see it the prednisone does for my back.

Emily has insomnia and some behavioral side effects (agitation, primarily) with Prednisone, but usually not until she's been on it for several days. She does, however, start gaining relief quite quickly- usually within the first 24hrs. Three days, as posted above, is probably short enough dose to spare you major side effects... except the potential for your cfrd being affected, which I imagine could be affected much sooner. I hope you do ok with that- it's good you are ok thus far! I'd recommend checking your sugar more often than usual to be on the safe side, since even people who don't have cfrd can sometimes have trouble when on prednisone.

She has generally needed a much longer course when she is sick with bronchitis; after unsuccessfully trying a shorter course she's needed 10 days or so; the first 5 days at 10mg bid then a taper for 5 days.

We are in the middle of a prednisone burst right now. Andrew is on maintenance 10 mg. every other day, but his doctor uses bursts from time to time that start him out at 60 mg. every day and wean him down to his normal dose within a couple of weeks. Andrew's main side affects are night sweats, increased appetite, and most of all, extreme sensitivy/irritation. He is very difficult right now, and I'm trying so hard to remind myself that it is not him, it's the medicine! I know it's no picnic for him, and I hate seeing him so down in the dumps. I hope you have a better time with it, Carrie. I know you have to watch your sugar on top of everything else. Take care!

You sound like me on prednisone... I found that drinking lots of cold water helps slow down the sweating. As for the jittery, I end up taking tylenol PM to try to help me sleep when I'm on it.
