pregnancy and lifting

Hi,

I was just wondering if your OB/GYNs have ever said anything about not lifting heavy things when you are pregnant. I am thinking that it's almost impossible for me not to lift because I watch my son by myself and I have to carry him all the time (about 25 lbs). I've done some research online, but there's conflicting information on there. I haven't even had my first prenatal visit yet, so I don't even have an OB/GYN to ask, so you guys are next in line for my questions!

Thanks,
Leah 26 w/CF, 5 wks pregnant, mom to 10-month-old

I think it is ok unless you have bleeding or cramping. My doctor had me on pelvic rest for the first 16 weeks this time, which involved no lifting, but that was because I had two threatened miscarriages during my first pregnancy.

Don't worry about lifting. Usually your body will let you know its limits if you pay attention. If lifting heavy things were out, pregnant women who have kids already would be in an uproar. And you are so early still. The baby is protected in the uterus - there really isn't much that could bother it except if you get hit in the abdomen. Straining, lifting, raising your arms over your head - all fine. Just don't overdo it

My SIL is almost 30 weeks pregnant and she can't carry her son (about 20 lbs) for more than a few minutes at a time now because she has bad pubic bone pain and carrying him makes it way worse. But our midwife didn't tell her not to lift him, only to listen to her body.

since I was followed by a peri they did tell me not more than 10-15lbs which in hindsight I think was WAY too conservative and I woudl go with the 'listen to yoru body' since everyoen is different. I too had a bleed contractions etc so this advice later became prudent for me but I was told this in the beginning.

my one piece of advice would be to not stress about anything (even things that your happy hormones will convince you might be the end of the world LOL) to relax and to take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt, I once completely freaked because I realize I at feta cheese and gasp....lunchmeat. Anyway I later quit reading all the hype and books and went with what seemed logical and reasonable to ME and how my body felt and this is fully what I intend to do next time. Also if they tell you not to excercise only walk I woudl highly contest that one with them, that is what they told me adn I think it was a huge mistake for me.

ok there is way more than you asked for..sorry
