Prenatal diagnosis - is one safer than the other?

I just found out that I'm pregnant, both DH and I are carriers. I wouldn't terminate, but I think I need to know if the baby has CF or not, plus it would determine how/where I would deliver.

Is any one safer than the other? I know they both carry risks, but haven't had time to research yet.

From what I recall, CVS is slightly more risky than an amnio. The advantage to CVS is that it can be preformed in the first trimester (with an amnio you need to wait until your second trimester). And this is probably only an advantage if you were considering termination.

Depends on the doctor performing it. Some docs have just as low risk with CVS. I guess the benefit of doing it earlier is that if something went wrong as a result of the procedure you would experience the loss earlier in pregnancy. Also, having the results a month or more sooner may ease your mind, especially if the baby doesn't have CF after all. Only thing is that having 2 samples so that you can double check results with 2 different labs might be worthwhile for a CVS. I don't know what the false positive rate is with an amnio but with a CVS it is a bit high.

thank you - I didn't know the false positive rate was high - is it because it can take maternal cells??? I wonder why?
