I am trying to find some information on prenatal testing for CF. My daughter was dx at birth, but I am now pregnant again. We are considering doing the genetic testing prenatally. Has anyone had it done? At what point can I have it done? How accurate is it? How is it done?Any answers would be helpful. Thanks,Christie

It is usually done by Amnio. It is extremely accurate. Just a word of caution. Our second child had an abnormal "alpha fetal protein test" with an increased risk of Downs syndrome. Her risk was 1 in 80. This was huge. Most kids are 1 in 5000 before the test. We did the Amnio and Caroline was fine. No Downs syndrome. Our third Child has CF. Caroline had a 25% chance of having CF and we totally ignored it because we just didnt know. You never know what is hanging out there. If you need to know, you need to know. But you cant rule out everything.

Hi Christie,Congratualtions! There are 2 tests that can be done Amnio and someting called CVS. CVS takes a sample without a needle through your stomach and can be done sooner, but there is a higher risk of miscarriage with it. So if you can wait for a few more weeks the amnio is probably safer for the child. Good luck!!!!!Andrea

Hi - our first daughter also has CF and was diagnosed at 9 weeks old. When I got pregnant the second time I had the CVS test. It is done between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy. It does increase your chance of a miscarriage but VERY slightly. There are quite a few websites out there that will give you information. Just type in Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) in a google search. By the way, our HEALTHY baby girl was born in June....good luck to you!
