At DS' last appointment, his doctor mentioned having pfts done next month at his next appointment. We've been practicing with bubbles and noisemakers... Anybody else have some tips?

My son's doctor started doing them more or less for practice last year when the boy turned 5. She's letting him learn on the job and not making any major diagnostic decisions based on the results quite yet. I hope they make it fun.

Learning to listen to the instructions and blow on command while having his nose pinched shut with a clamp is maybe worth a minute of practice. Learning to NOT swallow while this is going on is also important - it is (at least for me) hugely uncomfortable to swallow with your nose plugged and mouth closed; try it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Learning how to not breath in will happen when it happens - it's just dang hard to keep pushing air out for as long as they want you to do it. (I've done the whole PFT thing myself too, for reasons other than CF).

My daughter 5wcf has been doing them regularly since 2.5 and the thing that helped her learn the technique the best are those party blowers, the ones that have the paper that is curled up and it shoots straight out when they blow. We have her try to keep them blown out straight as long as possible, which is how the pft is done. We let her "get us" with them by getting face-to-face with her, she loves it.

I do have a bunch of those party blower things in preparation. When I asked the RT at our local clinic how to practice, he handed me a chunk of blue tubing (2" or so in diameter) and told me to count to 5 verrrrry slowly while he exhaled. Tried it once, but he had issues with having to inhale.

Also we've decided not to have pfts done at our local CF clinic due to ongoing concerns with germ control practices or lack there of, but what are some things we should consider when he goes to his CF clinic in the city next month?
