Preschool?

Hi,

We have the opportunity to put our child in a great school, only a few hours a day but 5 days a week. It is a 12 child montessori. I have the opportunity to keep her at home with me, but I think she would really enjoy the social aspects of this with continuity of friends and learning. She is 3 1/2. I am on the fence because she hasn't had any chest infections yet and I am wondering if I will put her at risk with exposure, thus advancing this disease too early from catching more colds.

For those of you who have chosen preschool, did you notice a decline in health? Would you go for it or keep them at home until kindergarten?

Thank you!

Eventually she is going to go to school, right? Check out the facility in terms of cleanliness, rules regarding sick kids -- see what your comfort level is and go from there.

DS is an only child and was in both daycare and preschool, but the facility he attended was wonderful about sanitizing toys and surfaces, letting us know if any illnesses were going aroun. And he pretty much thrived in that environment. And during his preschool years, the director would say "some of the kids are home sick with a stomach bug, etc." and I'd wait for DS to get sick as well and he was probably one of the healthiest kids in the group. Think he maybe had a couple ear infectios in all that time, that was it.

Thanks Liza.

Yes, she is definitely going to go to school. And, they do sanitize everything really well, have children wash hands before eating, etc. I am inclined to do it and keep her out of a bubble

I saw DO IT! OMG I would love that chance. (for my daughter)

HOWEVER I would start her on probiotics and high dose vit C to boost her immune system.

Preschool can be very fun and the chances are pretty high it will be a good experience for your daughter. The fact that there are 12 kids to a class is great and that alone minimizes infections. My older son (non cf) had 20 kids in his preschool class and that is why i specifically sought out a smaller environment( 12 kids) for my son with CF, who is now 13. When my son was in preschool I would just keep him home if he didn't feel good or if there was something going around. For us preschool was very positive, we met a lot of nice people we keep in touch with to this day, and the social aspect was great for my son. I am sort of of the belief that you need to be exposed to people, thus germs, not go looking for them, but kids will get sick sort of thing. I think that builds immunities. My sister in law has home-schooled her children from the start and they are sick more than we ever are, go figure. It is also a great introduction to kindergarten, so keep the positives in mind. Good luck. ;-)

I would do it! My daughter never went to daycare, so I KNEW she needed to go play w/ friends at preschool. She went last year, every other day for about 3 hours. She did great, somehow never caught anything she was exposed to. I do say, she was exposed to about 4-5 dif things (! BUT, they are gonna be exposed at some point.

She didn't get sick though throught out the year )

She LOVED preschool!!!!!!!!!!!! DO IT!!!!

Definitely do it!!! They don't sell bubbles to put our kids in and why would we want to isolate them like that anyway.

I was really concerned last year when alyssa started preschool, but it was THE BEST decision ever. She got through the whole year without a hospitalization (and only twice on oral abx). She loved school and she became so independent through the process. She loves "her" friends and everything about school. Alyssa swims at preschool, so I decided to tell the other parents about CF and the g-tube so that they would be informed well enough to answer any questions their kids might have. It went very smoothly, and the other parents were fantastic about keeping their sick kids home and telling me if something came up.
