Presentation

Hello everyone! I'm a sophomore in college, and in my Science in Society class I have to do a presentation on some issue of my choice regarding science, technology, and society. The issue needs to have more than one side to it so that I can present a claim, and then the veiwpoints, opinions, and facts from people on the other side. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about an issue that would somehow involve cf? I don't know about everyone else, but it seems that whenever I tell someone that I have cf, they genereally stare at me with a blank expression because they have never heard of it, or they say that they might have heard of it but have no idea what it is. It would be great if I could do my assignment, plus educate people a bit on cf at the same time!! Any suggestions? Thanks!

You could talk about the adcances in science as far as discovery of the gene, improvements in genetic testing, finding new and improving old drugs to treat CF - that's the science part. Technology could be like the vest, aerosols, PFT testing machines, CT scans for sinuses and other things, internet for support and community. Tech/Science both would apply to the development of transplants. Especially since they've been able to separate lungs from heart. Then talk about the pros and cons of these things. The more we know about genetic testing, the more people will have the option to choose not to have a child with CF, thinking that our lives just aren't worth it, without being counselled by someone who actually has CF to help understand it and see the value of a person's life, even with CF. The more we know about infection, the more isolated we get from one another and we lose that support (like summer CF camps that have been done away with). But, with all the advancements, we have a significant and growing adult population. People are marrying and having children, having careers. ???
