Preventitive tune-ups are really normal for all ages. It depends on your CF clinic's protocall. Some send 'em in every few months like clock work, others only when infection is rampant. It really is up to you. Discuss the hospitalization routiene w/ your doc. What antibiotics are used? how often is the dose? HOw long is the stay? Will you need to do IV's at home (it's not difficult)? What kind of IV line will be placed? Also find out how many other CFers are in. My clinic will only admit 5 to the same hospital at the same time to prevent infection. In December, I was admitted to a private hospital (I was the only patient on the whole floor!) because it was flu season and there were many CFers at the hosp. I usually went to. Colorado was hit really hard w/ flu this year. Weight gain is an uphill battle for most of us all our lives. Be sure you don't fall into the routiene of going in everytime somethings not right. Most CF treatment is preventitave maintanence. If she's not packing on pounds don't jump the gun, the most I've ever weighed in my life is 102 lbs. I'm at 90 right now. I personally only go in if I'm feeling lousy and my normal care isn't doing it, b/c it usually means that an infection is going crazy. If you are on top of airway clearance, enzymes, nebs and a balanced high calorie diet, she should be in good health and shouldn't need to go in. The other thing to consider is how much can your daughter handle? It can do a number on you emotionally when you are in the hospital. Sometimes I'm up for it, others I just want to die to avoid the emotional pain. You know her best.Debbie22yr old w/ CF
