Although this link may not work if you do not subscribe to WSJ online, it is a good article on Propofol as an anesthetic. Give the link a try.

Good article...I personally like propofol. When I worked as an ICU nurse, we used that drug alot especially during cardioversions. The nice thing about tht drug is that it acts quickly and also wears off quickly. When we prepped a patient for cardioversions, which is delivering a shock to the heart using defib paddles to restore normal heart rhythms- usually for those who have what is called atrial fibrillation or flutter, we would have anesthesia around as well as respiratory. The drug would then be given after all preparations had been carried out as ordered and then we would deliver the shocks. The patient would wake up fairly quickly and not remember a thing. In fact, we had one gentleman telling us a story as we were giving the propofol, he went out, we shocked him, and when he woke up, he continued his sentence right where he left off!LOL!!! He asked when we were going to give him the shocks, we told him that we already did and that his heart was now in its correct rhythm. He couldn't believe it LOL! I have been given propofol a few times, I have had no problems with it. The only thing we watched for on the the unit was low blood pressure, it was a common side effect but easily corrected. Thanks for the article, I love reading new things...hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
