Pseudomonas - How do you avoid them?

Now that I am learning more about this disease, I have discovered the harsh reality of what pseudomonas can do to CF patients.

1.) What precautions do you take to keep them out of your house?

2.) What other precautions do you take in general to avoid them?

3.) Do you use swimming pools? I hear swimming is great for lung strengthening, but am unsure about the risk of infection here.

Thank you.

I don't take any specific precautions to avoid pseudomonas, just very diligent with hand washing, sterilizing nebs, etc. and I avoid hot tubs.

I swim a few days a week, but in HS and college I swam almost every day for competitive swimming and water polo, so I by no means avoid pools. I do, however, use the water pik or other nasal saline rinse by recommendation of my doctor to rinse out my nose after swimming.

Since my dd cultured it at 15 months and I realised what pain it was , I do the following:

1/ pour bleach AT NIGHT into bathtub & sink (at night so as not to irritate already sensitive lungs)

2/ let the water run for a few minutes in the morning and before she takes the bath in the evening

3/I don't let her near any stale water (ponds, lakes etc).

4/Don't have any flowers or plants inside the house.

I personally (and so is my clinic) am against public pools, even if they are disinfected, clorox is very irritative, and also there is still water all around the pool edges.

It might seem like a lot of constraints, but IMHO it is no big deal compared to the burden of treatments when you have PA vs when you don't.

It might be different for someone who cultures it regularly though.

My son has had pseudomonas for about 11 years. The strain he has was known to be carried by a lot of patients at the clinic we went to at the time.

So, he got it from the nurse, doctors, equipment, toys or whatever. He was never an inpatient at that hospital.

I would be checking up on infection control policies at your clinic and hospital to avoid pseudomonas and other nastier bacterium.

my daughter cultured pseudomonas at 1 yr. and i was taking all the precautions...but she hasnt since then! here is what our docs at 2 diff clinics recommended:
-no standing water (ie: lakes, ponds, fish bowls, etc..)
-bleach shower heads after use, pseudomonas can grow in shower heads and then is vaporized in the steam of the shower and it makes it easier to breathe in.
-i also use bleach in drains weekly
-i change my shower liner frequently
we were told standing water and soil (especially wet) harbor pseudomonas....but i do let my daughter help me garden with gloves on. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi. Thanks for your reply. How do you bleach the showerheads? Do you just wipe or soak them somehow?

Thanks!

I use a spray that is not exactly bleach but the label says it is effective against PA. This way it is quite easy and i do it every night.
