Pseudomonas...

My daughter Mariah cultured Pseudomonas for the first time and she is nine months old. They have her on Cipro for two weeks and want to do a round of Tobi for three months. Does anyone think that is excessive especially since she has minimal symptoms.(clear runny nose for 1 week but is cleared up now.)She coughs a few times a day but with no mucus production.
Also, has anyone experienced hearing loss?Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think the thinking is on the first culture of pseduo, to agressively attack it, to try and erradicate it and keep it away for as long as u can. When my son 1st cultured it, we were given the option of either doing Cipro/tobi, or IVs. I chose the IVs, but 9 mos later he cultured it again.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but the hearing loss is more of an issue w/ IV tobramyacin than it is the inhaled tobi. That is why when doing IVs they draw a lot of blood to check for peeks and throughs, so they make sure they have strong enough medicence being delivered, but not so strong as to cause side effects, such as hearing loss or renal problems.

it was my understanding that hearing loss could be a side affect for the inhaled tobi as well, but it shouldn't last long.

I think an aggressive approach to pseudomonas makes sense. this bateria can lead to conditions which can cause extensive lung damage which is responsible for both the reduction in quality and legnth of life.

my son who is 3 came home from the hospital after a 2 week round of iv tobramycin and timentin and after a couple days home a small dry cough developed. it seemed to be escalating. he is on inhaled tobi now and the cough was gone after a few days.

According to the link on the Mediwidget, inhaled TOBI can cause hearing loss. In older patients, you might experience ringing in the ears first, but that is a tough one when it's a baby. Anyway, I would agree to agressively treat this first bout and hope for the best.
