pulled muscles from coughing

Hi everyone! Just wondering if any of you have any theraputic methods for yourself when you pull a muscle coughing. I am not sure if I pulled a muscle or bruised a rib or something but I have this pain in my side for about a month now and it won't go away. It feels like that pain you get when you are excersizing and you get that sharp pain in your side. It's quite annoying, not really painful, but annoying. Would a heating pad work or icing it work better? Any ideas and I would greatly appreciate it!!

sure it's not gallbladder..? is it constant pain or comes and goes? search 'gallbladder' and you'll find a lot of details on it since many of us (including me) have had it taken out (CF related).

If pain is in the same place and not easing up it doesn't sound muscular ... maybe a mucus plug causing pleurisy.

good luck. if you suspect gallbladder order an ultrasound - it's the only way to conclusively diagnose it (or rule it out).

What is a pleurisy? I've had plenty of mucus plugs and coughed them up many times but I have no idea what a pleurisy is. I don't think it's the gallblader, to high for that. It's right under my rib cage. But I will check into that just in case and to be on the safe side. Thanks for your input Lauren!

is the pain right or left side? mine (for gallbladder) was on my front right side around 2 in. down from my bra strap on edge of rib meeting gut. pleurisy (as it relates to CF at least) is when a portion of your lung pushes on the casing / sack that they lungs are in causing a sharp pain (some describe as a rubbing sensation) that literally can be the sack rubbing on a rib. The sack has a lot of sensitivity while the lungs do not as my doc describes. Best thing to do is get the plug out that is likely causing the lung to push on the casing.

Sounds like it might be gallbladder though. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life to get it out.

I'm actually having the same issue. I think it's from the way I
slept two weeks ago. I sleep with 4 to 5 pillows to avoid coughing
and I think I pulled a muscle or strained a muscle. I figured it
would have healed by now, but sometimes it's worse then
others...especially if I breathe deeply. Anyway I guess these
things take time to heal.

I would see a doctor and perhaps take a magnesium calcium pill. I buy Gary Nulls supplement cal/mag. It helped me after my minor car accident. Great for relaxing muslces

my husband (32 w/cf) used to complain of this also. He started going to the chiropractor, which understandably isn't for everyone, however his chiropractor said it wasn't a pulled muscle at all, but a rib he put out of place by coughing. As soon as he adjusted it, it was instant relief. He also goes for a massage once a month, which seems to really help all the muscles in his back that seem to get tight from coughing.
