question about amnio

I have two sons, one is 3 and the other is 12months. My second child is under weight he only weighs 16 lbs. and he does not crawl or walk. so his doctor has ordered a cf test at childrens hospital. I am really stressed out. I had a amnio with my second child. (because I was 39) and nobody ever asked me if I should get tested for cf or have the amnio tested for cf. Doesn't that seem a little odd? How did I slip through the cracks? The fact that I had the amnio and it did not check for cf really stinks. Can any one shed some light on this for me. I am really scared and worried.

I had an amnio with my first child & they did ask me if we wanted CF to be included in the test. They asked if there was any history of CF in either of our families. There was not, but they still asked if we wanted to have CF included in the test just to be safe.

I had an amnio with my second child because my first had CF. I assumed CF was automatically included with all amnio testing, I am surprised to hear that it is not. You would think they would be checking for any genetic defect, especially the most common genetic disease. Does your child show other signs of the illness? Good luck to you

In general unless you and your partner have both tested positive for being carriers of the CF gene amniotic fluid would not be sent for CF testing with a routine amnio. Carrier screening is usually offered to pregnant women and this involves a blood test. If both partners are positive for being carriers then an amnio is offered or CF testing is added to amnio tests already being done.

In my state they do not automatically test for CF nor was I asked about CF what so ever. The CF coordinator at my son's hospital mentioned that they are trying to change that however. With both of my pregnancies they checked for Down's and that is all I remember them mentioning. My second was born with CF.

OB doctors just started asking their patients if they want CF testing in the last three years. So it is very possible that some doctors are not asking their patients about it yet or they don't see the need. CF does not a child's ability to walk or crawl, so that would not be a symptom of cf. Failure to gain an appropriate amount of weight for a baby is a good reason to test for cf. You can also look on http://www3.nbnet.nb.ca/normap/CF.htm
to see some other cf symptoms.

To piggyback on what someone already said, amnois do not routinely check for CF. They do amnios to check for chromosome abnormalities. If there is a reason to suspect CF they can take extra fluid during the amnio and test for CF but it is not routinely done. I had it done with my 3rd child because my 2nd child has CF. As it turned out my 3rd child also has CF. Best of luck to you.
