Question about CFRD

Ok I remember reading a thread on here where it seemed like a lot of women got CFRD when they were pregnant or shortly after they had a baby. Its been a long time when this was posted but ........

My question do you remember your symptoms and if so what were they? Im just trying to educate myself with this just incase I was to get it. In June my husband and I are planning on trying for a baby assuming everything works out alright, meaning job wise and depending on what the doc has to say when we bring this to his attention in April.....

I dont want to get CFRD but for some reason I think its very possible that I will even if I was to never have kids I could probably still get CFRD, but I think maybe getting pregnant makes the chances of getting it even higher.

I done a search about CFRD and read about the symptoms.... so did you have any symptoms or did the CF clinic just do Diabetic testing all the time.... I guess what Im trying to ask is how did you find out you had it and what were your symptoms.........

Please give me your input on this especially any of those that had a baby and might have some kind of suggestions or experience with this ...

I did have gestational diabetes while pregnant. I only found out thru the routine testing. Never thought anything of it until the doctor called with the results of the glucose tolerance test. My sugars did return to normal within 24 hours after delivery. They did tell me there was a chance they wouldnt.

Thank you Melissa for your reply, it did help. After reading more information about CFRD it has helped me understand it a little more. I guess that some people can get it during pregnancy and then not have it after giving birth. I didnt know that part. I just want to try and be prepared if possible, it should happen and I get it. I also know the symptoms now and how we get it. You know its funny but I could swear Ive read a post to where there was more people that had gotten CFRD before or after pregnancy, but I guess I could be wrong apparently them people must of left this forum or doesnt post any more or something who knows. I guess I shouldnt be too worried about it after all. Thank you for helping me out Melissa and telling me your experience on this.

Hi Melissa,

I am not pregnant yet; however, my doctor has expressed the concern for gestational diabetes. He says that it's because your body already has a hard enough time producing insulin yet alone when pregnant. I have been considered a "mild diabetic" in the past. My highest A1C was 6.3 which is almost nothing. 6.0 is the cutoff. Usually my A1C is around 5.7. So I am technically considered "borderline diabetic". They are almost positive that I will be during pregnancy and remain afterwards.

For me, I suspected that I was diabetic once I started having a lack of concentration and somewhat out-of-it experiences 2 hours post breakfast. I never really had it at any other time of the day. Only after breakfast. My blood sugars were normal the rest of day. Even after pizza or pasta, they were no higher than 150 2 hours post eating (which isn't bad). My diabetes doc tried me on Amaryl and something else. I was never on shots or anything. The Amaryl was 1 mg a day. I was near to nothing. But then what happened was after the 2 hour mark, I started to crash. It came on so fast there was close to nothing I could do. One minute 2 hours post my sugar was 170 and would plumit to 60 20 minutes later. One time I dropped to 45. I would get so dizzy and confused I wouldn't even know where I was. I nearly passed out a few times. I would quick drink soda or orange juice, anything with sugar. But it was really bad. So after 6 months, they stopped the Amaryl and tried the other drug, I think it was called Prandin. That had the same effect. So they decided since I was only really high that one time of the day that they would let it go. They only do A1C's now every 6 months. Last time it was the 5.7. I have to get it repeated this month. I'm no longer dizzy or anything. I'm fine. I had to do BS's for awhile which also are fine now. So now I only have to take them if I am sick or "feel high or low". That's it.

But yes, the doc does think that I will become gestational and remain after pregnancy. I would have to do the shot form of insulin while pregnant since the pill forms are not safe for the baby. Hope that helps.

You're welcome. Feel free to ask any other questions!

Jake and I want to try for now while I'm not diabetic. If I become diabetic beforehand, we will be turning to adoption. I do not wish to conceive going in diabetic.

Basically for me:

Low Blood Sugars: Dizzy, Confusion, Sweaty, Clammy, Nausea.

High Blood Sugars: Out-of-It (felt like everything was in slow-motion or over-drive), Headache.

For me, feeling low was/is much worse. Another point, I have a tendency to drop lower and quicker at that time of the month. I usually have a snack between breakfast and lunch to avoid dropping. My doc says it's "dumping syndrome". Instead of my pancreas producing insulin gradually after a meal, it dumps it all at one time which results in the crash. It only ever happens after breakfast. Even though I am off all insulin pills, I still do dip some after breakfast. That's why I always carry something with me if I have to go somewhere.
