Hey guys, I have a question about the bottom portion of my son's report from his throat culture. He only grew staph, but at the bottom of the report it has sveral different antibiotics listed and out beside them it has the letter S or R, it also has $ by them as well. What does this mean? I just want to be able to FULLY understand his reports when emailed to me. Thanks in advance!

I'd love to help you because I remember being bewildered the first time we got ours, but yours sounds different than the ones we get. Can you call your CF nurse to have her explain it to you?

S = suseptable

R = resistant

There should also be an "I" - at least there are on most reports. That stands for intermediate.

Not all anti-biotics work all the time. Some bacteria are suseptable, some are resistant, and some are intermediately suseptable (may work in high doses).

$ might be hospital protocol. Some hospitals/physician groups try to prescribe generics because it means more bonus for them at the end of the year.
