Question about genes?

Hello. I've noticed that a lot of people on here post asking about specific gene mutations. I must be out of the loop or just behind on CF information. How do they determine what gene you have? I didn't even realize they could do this. Are certain genes worse than others? Just curious.

Allisa, I've been wanting to ask same question. If not for this site, I would have never known about the gene mutation specification. When my granddaughter went in last week for her 6mo. cf check-up, I asked about the gene thing, and the Dr. said they were trying to get ins. to pay for test. He said it was important to know which mutation you have because there are new treatments for some specific mutations. We got the call 2 days later that ins. would pay--got the test done last Monday. Waiting for results.

If the dx was made by a sweat test than a blood test needs to be done to determine the mutations. If a dx was made by the blood test than the mutations are already on file somewhere......just inquire. Its good to have for any possible treatments & the future in general!

Thanks all for your responses. Just in the couple of weeks that I have been on here, I have found a lot of info that I wasn't even aware of. I may ask the dr. when I go next week. I had the sweat test done (diagnosed at 3). My fear of needles will probably prevent me from doing it, but maybe next time that I HAVE TO have blood drawn, I can have it checked then. Thanks again all for the information.
