I have scoured the Great Strides website and previous postings on this site for the answer to one question: How long is the walk?? I can't believe I can't find it anywhere, so I'm just going to ask here!

I've never been to one before and really need to get in shape and prepare.

Also, the site says people with cepacia are asked NOT to come...do you think people strictly adhere to that? I do not have cepacia and am very worried about participating in a large cf function because of it.

Thank you!

Jessy
On the walk length - it varies based on the location. The walk we participated in was just over one mile.

On the second question, I hope that people strictly adhere to that so as to not make others sick. Based on my experience if anyone did that and was "found out', I'm sure there would be repercussions. It's not an issue to take lightly.

Jessykt, The walks vary in length. Usually they are just a couple of miles or less. People with CF at the walks often wear brightly colored t-shirts IDing them (thank you CFF). In my opinion, this is brilliant. It makes me a tad self-conscious, but at the same time, I know who I should avoid getting too close to. It also lets everyone know just who they are there supporting and helping (especially those cutie kiddos!). I think people are pretty good about the cepacia rule, I certainly know kids and adults in our area who have not attended due to their culture results. I really appreciate and respect that. I would take some hand sanitizer with you, use it A LOT, and just generally use common sense as you would in any crowd of people who might be carrying the flu, etc. I have attended a lot of walks over the years and have never gotten ill afterwards, so that is reassuring to me.
