Katy--

Just wondering if I might ask you a question. I remember from a previous post that you said you are a speech therapist. I was concerned about my son who is almost 26 months being delayed in his speech. He has recently began to rapidly expand his vocabulary. I sat down and made a list of words that he uses and it was about 100 or so, probably more but thats all I could think of at the time. He is also using 2-3 word phrases now. The problem is that of those words maybe 10-15 would be understood by someone outside of his family. The other words are not pronounced right--mostly he will leave off the end consonants. I went through most of the alphabet with him and he can make most of the sounds of the letters. Is the pronounciation thing a big deal right now? Should I still persue a speech eval and possible therapy? Just wondering what you thoughts are. Thanks in advance for your reply!

I don't mind replying here. I'm sure anyone who is not interested in the topic can skip over it.
At 26 months, most kids use over 50 words and are beginning to combine them. So he sounds like he is doing fine there! At about 2 years, kids should be approximately 50% intelligible to strangers. That does not mean that the words should sound perfect... it means that people know what he is saying about half of the time. If his vocabulary has just recently begun to grow, the sounds will become more clear with practice. If you don't notice any improvement or if he gets frustrated when he is not understood, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have an evaluation done. They make it fun (to them it's just playing with toys). It's great that you are making a list to keep track of his words!!! I hope this helped, feel free to email me at katyf13@yahoo.com
