Question about testing

My husband wants me to ask this, sorry if it dumb! Do we both have to be carriers for our son to have CF. I am a carrier and when my husband was tested his came back neg, but it was only for the 32 mutations. My husband is in denial right now and in teh long run I hope he is right and "nothing" is wrong with our son, but I on the other hand want to educate myself on what we may be dealing with!
Thank you!!!

Yes, in order to have CF both parents must be carriers. But there are over 1500 mutations. If he was cleared of 32, there are still over 1500 he hasn't been tested for.

I hope it turns outokay, but what you have hear does not eliminate the possibility.

If your child has symptoms consistent with CF, I'd urge having him tested sooner rather than later despite your spouse's negative screening. My screening came back negative before our son was born, but it turned out I had one of the 1,475 other mutations and our son has CF.

Even if you were both tested and didn't have any of the known mutations, that does not mean your child cannot get CF. There is always the spontaneous mutation issue. In any given organism, their own genetic material can spontaneous mutate and cause something that wasn't inherited from their parents. Not being carriers is not a foolproof way to ensure your child doesn't have CF. Its much more likely that a child would inherit a mutation from each parent, but not impossible the child would mutate on their own.
