question-coughing due to drainage

The last couple of days my daughter has been coughing only at night (when laying down). I'm sure it is due to the change of the weather that has turned cold and rainy. My question is does anyone give a breathing treatment (tx) for drainage or just let them cough like crazy? I have given the tx's and CPT's but it does not seem to help since it's drainage and the still continues to cough after tx. Just didn't know if there are any suggestions for this. I have popped her up, laid her head over pillows (almost upside down), etc. Anyone from Louisville, KY who has this same problem living in the Ohio Valley, if so, what is your tx and how well does it work for you? Daughter on Zyrtec, Singular (but does not seem to help like it should), Nasonex, and a saline spray at times to clean her out. I know she has CF but there should be some control over the sinus problems. What causes CF people to have so many sinuses infections??????? Thanks for your replys,Mother of 2 yr old w/CF

I do not know what you mean by tx's but I do know about sinus infections. We used a great product called Sterimar (saline solution with dolphin on the front). We were told it was the same as HydraSense but she really reacted better to the Sterimar. My husband tried it as well and said it worked wonders. It is an over the counter thing at the pharmacy and does not need a prescription. We also tried Nasonex and it was not as effective.Judging by other emails this is a problem for many cfer's but our daughter seems to have outgrown it for the moment. She will be 4 in July. The problem is that her sinus problems eventually became ear infections and also caused reflux and we were told they were all connected. It was a tough period of time but she no longer has any of them.

We also live in the Ohio Valley but not Louisville. OUr son is almost 6 and has lots of sinus problems. We do nasal irrigations twice a day. We mix 1 quart of warm water with 2-3 tsps of pickling/canning salt (not table salt because of the iodine) with 1 tsp of baking soda. We use 1/2 the solution in the am, 1/2 at night and use a bulb syringe to squirt it into the sinuses and then let him blow it back out. HTH.

I had all sorts of problems when I lived in the TN Valley, but my mom and I moved to COlorado and all that stuff stopped. But anywhere you go, you're going to run into the problems of that area. Here, it's really dry, and so I have a harder time getting mucus out, even though I don't cough as much, and the air is thinner. Try doing her physio just before she goes to sleep. A change in humidity or the blooming in spring can act up airways. See if she has any allergies that are causing her problems.Debbie23 w/ CF

I have cf and that same problem. My doc says it most likely occurs from one of three things. Sinus drainage, asthma-like components (like a weather change or allergy or something) and reflux of acid from the stomach. He suggests propping the head up for the first and third problems, and breathing treatment for the second.

We used dimetapp for those irritating night coughs--some doctors do not like antihistamines for CF, but once in a while, when nothing else worked, dimetapp usually did. See what your doctor thinks.

If her cough is due to post nasal drip then it is okay to use an expectorant. Products like robitussin help rid the cough, but do not dry out the lung secretions so it shouldn't effect pt. I have to say that if you are going to use anything use an expectorant before you ever use a suppressant because you want her to still be able to cough up her plugs.
