Question for CF Moms

Hi all,

My husband and I have been TTC for 8 mos. I have a progesterone deficiency, so I am taking a progesterone supplement. My reproductive endocrinologist also determined that my CM is an issue, so I am taking Mucinex. I find it very frustrating that there is a dirth of information out there about female fertility and CF.

I know there are a lot of moms (and aspiring moms!) on these forums. I was wondering if those of you who've had babies could share how long it took you to get pregnant and if you needed 'help'. Also, I theorize that there's probably some correlation between genotype and fertility, so if you could also share what your mutations are, that would be great!

Thanks!

I conceived without drugs or treatments both times. 1st preg, it took one month. 2nd preg it took a whole year. The 2nd time there were no physical issues per se, just lots of stress and irregular cycles-ended up I was ovulating too late in my cycle, and it was either losing the embryo extremely early, (had likely 2 very early miscarriages) or I was missing ovulation entirely and not timing sex properly.

I have DF508 and M1101R and I was able to conceive naturally 3 times (middle one was miscarriage). With my son I used Mucinex and charted and that was about it. It took 5 months to get pregnant but I believe it could have happened sooner if I was more aware of the way my cycle works. With my daughter I was still nursing my son and self diagnosed myself with low progesterone (side effect of nursing) so went to my OB with a request for progesterone supplementation to take after ovulation till day 14 (and a - test or till 14 weeks if +). I also took Vitex to help my progesterone, vit B (6 I think), RRL tea, and used preseed. I conceived twice in 3 months. And I was charting.

Can I ask what progesterone supplement you are on and how you take it? I can't remember the name of mine (drawing a blank) but it was the natural progesterone and I used it once a day at night as a suppository.

I conceived naturally 3 times The first one it took about 5months the 2nd was a month but had a miscarriage and the 3rd was the first time we had sex after talking about it. But i had also just come off an oral antibiotics which had obviously cleared all the mucus out. my periods are also very regular and i knew when i was ovulating. I have DF508 and some way off mutation.

Scarlett,

My progesterone supplement is also a vaginal suppository that I take twice a day. It doesn't have a brand persay. I get it from the local 'fertility' pharmacy.

Ah ok. I was hoping you were taking it as a suppository and not orally. I did a lot of research before I started progesterone and there are women out there taking it orally even though there are more side effects and it is less effective.

I have your same mutation (DD508) and am trying to get pregnant as well. I haven't been trying for very long and am already frustrated!! Would love to hear if any DD508s were able to get pregnant naturally.

I also have DD508 mutation and we have been trying for just 2 months now, but I'm curious about my progesterone levels and my CM. After doing a little research, I am wondering about using pre-seed lubricant to aid with the CM problem but I don't know if it will work. I just know that even though it's only been 2 months, I'm just ready which is becoming really frustrating. I also am curious about those with our mutation and natural fertility.

My children are now 23 and 20 but I needed assistance both times. We used artificial insemination. It worked on the first or second time with our first child but took 6 times with the 2nd. (we were about to give up).
I also had to use progesterone suppositories once I got pregnant.
My doc told me I basically had built in birth control with my thick cervical mucus so I did not use any birth control after the second birth. I then got pregnant naturally a third time. This pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks.
My mutations are DF508 and R117H.

Hey Mary! I have been trying for 9 months. I have been seeing a fertility specialist & have been on Clomid for 3 months. At first I don't think my cycle was very regular. Which is common for women but i'm starting to think extremely common for CF women. I have had all the tests run (& my husband too) and everything checks out. So now I'm just waiting and praying :)

I'm also in the "still trying" boat. Before I got married and went on birth control, the most regular my cycles had ever been was probably every 2-3 months. While I was engaged I was really sick and went for 8 1/2 months without menstruating. I had hoped that somehow that would all get magically cured... ha! After coming off of birth control, my cycles have been all over the place. I have delayed ovulation over and over again, I am pretty sure because of the stress my body is under because of CF. The two worst cycles have been the last two - both times I had a hemoptysis right around the time I ought to have been ovulating, which made me really sick and REALLY delayed ovulation. In fact, I just started spotting today and I think this is going to be my first anovulatory cycle since I started charting.

We've been trying for about 6 months now. I've been really hoping that we could make it happen on our own (with the help of Vitex and Pre-seed), but I'm beginning to lose hope that that is going to happen! I had intended to get on Clomid about now, but my health hasn't been the best this summer so I think I'm holding off for a cycle or two.

It can definitely get discouraging, ugh! Good luck to all who are trying....

We had always been told that my daughter was probably sterile but I had heard of so many cases where people have been told that with or without CF that my daughter was on the pill. She was not really trying with her fiance and in fact she got a pounchy stomach we noticed one day, her periods were all over the place , we thought maybe she was getting a blockage or at least going to get out of size 12 little girl jeans she was mid 20's. Her sister kiddingly said maybe you should take a pregnancy test we all laughed and she did. To our surprise she was
pregnant and based on sonnigrm that was done same mos she was already 5 mos.
Good luck Tammy

In a word, YES. Wasn't even trying. As with Tammy15, docs had always sorta hinted that I was sterile. SURPRISE!!

Now, 20 years later, I'm sure my mom is still stunned that I gave her the only grandchild.

IMHO, she's the most awesome kid (young lady) EVER.

I got pregnant 13 years ago by mistake. Now, trying to get pregnant has been depressing. We have been "trying" for 7 years or so. We haven't had any tests done and don't know if we will. I wish you luck, though!
