Hello, I am 39 years old and I have Cystic Fibrosis and recently I have been having signs and symptoms I have never had before.

Sometimes when I cough hard or have a coughing spasm, my vision begins to get blurry to the point everything I look like is intermingled and I can not seperate items. Also at this time, I get numbness in my legs and arms and sometimes the back of the neck and I feel pressure in my chest which goes on for about 1/2 hour to and hour. The vision stays blurry but eventually gets better which lasts for an hour or so.

I have told my doctor of this happening and they have run neurological and heart tests which come back all normal. All bloodwork is also normal. I am NOT on O2 as my oxygen sats have been 97-100% and my blood sugar levels have been in the normal range and I do NOT have diabetes.

The reason why I am asking this is because it happened over the weekend. I had a couging spasm and I felt it coming on. My upper right leg went numb and tingling and my upper left arm did the same and my vision got blurry. THIS FREAKS ME OUT and I start to get anxiety which I realize and try to calm down, take slow deep breaths and just close my eyes.

Does anyone or has anyone ever have this happen to them and if so, do they know the causes? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. MAN I AM GETTING OLD!!!!!...lol. Thank you.

Ihave had this happen to me on 3 occasions threw a coughing fit each time, each time they got worse. the first time i was driving, and i couldnt feel my leg or foot for the gas or break! So that was pretty scarry, then my chest startd hurting something fierce but it wasnt like a sharp pain, it was like dull hard pain, if that makes any sence. Then the 2nd i couldnt move my whole body, honeslty i couldnt, i couldnt set up or anything, i would just fall over, it happend in the middle of the night, and i had to hollar for my mom, bc it was scarry, it lasted for about 20 min, my mom rubbed my leggs and arms. then the 3rd time, i was walking and trying to have a coughing fit at the same time, and i made it to my car, and couldnt feel my legs, and was sick to my stomach, and dizzy. I told my dr about it and he tough it was either a pinched nerve or a iron or vitamin diffency. I dont know what every it was it is scary and makes me sick to my stomach.

Hello. I have that blurry & blackening of vision. But,not the numbness. It has happened with intense coughing and with movements that are sudden - especially forward flexion. I have also been dx with papilledema(swelling around the optic nerve) and my eye specialists at a university based eye clinic have been trying to figure it all out... the "Why" question. My eyesight has gotten bad in my right eye especially (big blind spot and many other abnormal visual experiences) . they thought it could be related to sinuses but they never associate this with diabetes. I do have cfrd. I check my bg when it happens and it is not usually abnormally high or low. I have read that cf patients can experience night blindness due to vitamin A deficiency. But I bet this happens to you day and night right? Have you had eye exams?

I was recently readmitted to the hospital with some of the same symptoms. I was home doing IV antibiotics when after I finished flushing the line I immediately got a severe headache, numbness on my left side (legs & arms), blurry vision, and I couldn't comprehend what my husband was saying. We called 911 and I was rushed to the hospital to be discharged with the dx of "drug reaction." When I returned home I still wasn't back to normal for over 24 hrs. My husband called the CF clinic the next day and I was readmitted -- and all sorts of tests were conducted.

To make a long story short, it was found that I have a hole in my heart (patent foramen ovale or PFO). When I was administering the drugs air bubbles were getting into the line, passing thru the heart into my brain which caused some TIA (or stroke-like symptoms).
Susan

All of the literature I have read does say that coughing can also cause these symptoms. Don't fool around when this happens -- tell your docs!!! I was told that there are a number of CF'ers who have been diagnosed with PFO. You can find a lot of literature on the topic.

Hope this helps. If it happens again go to the ER. An echocardiogram was the test that showed that I had a PFO.<img src="i/expressions/brokenheart.gif" border="0">
