Question for the ladies only

Hi,

I just went for my yearly physical which includes a pap test. They found bacteria in my urine which they think was carried from the vagina because the pap test also showed bacteria. Then they gave me a presciption for a yeast infection, which I swear I don't have because I don't have any of the symptoms. It's the same result after every pap test. So my question is - do these results have anything to do with CF? I know we have more mucus down there compared to a regular woman, but does it work the same as in our lungs (Ie - traps more bacteria, etc.). I just don't know what to think. I have an appointment in a month, but I always seem to forget to ask by the time my appointments roll around. Any thoughts on this?

I don't know what to tell you... I just wanted to suggest... I collect questions over the 3 month period between my appointments too. I keep a little index card in my purse, and as the 3 months go by, I write questions on it. Then when the appointment comes, I ask the ones that still apply. Then I grab a new card, and start over until my next appointment. It works really well. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It's easy to get a yeast infection if you're on antibiotics - either oral or IV.

Do you have a bacterial infection or a fungal infection?

If it's bacterial, I bet it's from your urethra and not your vagina. It's pretty easy for women to get Urinary Tract Infections, CF or not.

A yeast infection is a fungal infection, not a bacterial one. If they found bacteria in your urine sample, and prescribed monistat (or similar) then that's incorrect.

There's a small possibility that the bacteria in your urine sample was the result of human error. No to be too graphic, but perhaps you didn't wipe up properly (front to back) before providing the sample (was it clean catch or mid-stream?)

Personally, I would call the lab and/or the gyno's office to ask which specific bacteria was in the sample. That will be helpful for your CF appointment.

One I agree with Lauren about the bacteria and fungal thing for yeast infections.

BUT I wanted to add:
Just because you don't have the obvious symptoms of a yeast infection doesn't mean you don't have a yeast infection. It can show up on the pap when you have an overgrowth of yeast even if it is slight or something to that effect. I say that because one of my friends always has it show up that she has a yeast infection but she rarely ever has symptoms when the results come back that way. I have had the same thing happen once before as well - and I most always get symptoms with a yeast infection.
