Question for you animal lovers

THis is just a quick question. My children and I are going to be volunteering for our local animal shelter. Basically, my daughter with CF (who is 7) her job will be to pet and socialize with cats/kittens. Over the summer, we may do more with dogs...ANything I should be concerned about CF wise? My daughter with CF will not be cleaning out cages; though my son who is older no CF may "get" to do that. She is not allergic and LOVES animals so I think this will be great; just making sure any pet experts know of any risk of picking up bacteria?

Thanks,
REbecca

As long as she's not allergic, she should be fine. The only thing that might be a concern at a pet shelter is the chemicals they use for cleaning. Usually they are very strong/harsh, so be careful about her breathing fumes from those cleansers.

I think it's great that you guys are volunteering. What an important lesson to teach your kids. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

What a wonderful idea for your kids. My oldest daughter volunteered at a animal shelter her freshman year of high school. As far an I know, there really shouldn't be anything to be concerned about. Just follow the same rules as anyone would. Washing hands between animals and after your done with animal contact. When dealing with cats though, you need to be more careful with scratches and any contact with litter boxes. Cats use litter boxes then scratch at the litter to cover up their waste then can scratch you with those same paws you want to be extra careul just for infection. Again though, these are precautions anyone would take, not just because your daughter has CF. Both of your kids will get so much out of this experience. Have fun.
