hello everyone! well ashton is doing good.. we may get to bring him home this week sometime.. not going to get my hopes up quite yet.. the only obstacle we are facing is the liver problems that the TPN caused.. it has caused his stool too lose its color due to the lack of bile being releases.. they have a GI doctor coming in to see him this week to decide if they need to start enzymes yet(which im sure they will) and hopefully after they start the enzymes and now that he is off of his TPN his liver functions will level out.. but other than that little obsticle he is doing great! Hopefully everyones chirstmas was great.. talk to everyone later

Good news on Ashton! Sounds like things are going as well as you can hope for!

The liver and pale poop happened to our daughter too when she was on TPN. They put her on Ursodile and that seemed to help a lot. Our GI doc thinks Ursodile (a synthethic form of bear bile that helps to keep the bile moving) is like magic. I think a lot of people with CF use it. Also our GI doc switched her from breast milk to Presgestimil formula and her condition improved then too. I didn't want to give up the breastfeeding, but she improved quickly with the switch.

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you!

That is great that Ashton might be coming home soon!! Life is SOOOO much easier/better when they come home as I am sure you expect. I really feel that breast milk is best. My daughter and son both did really well on breast milk. It is easily digestible and can give antibodies to children. The dietician recommended that I stop breastfeeding my daughter when she was four months old. She was vomiting a lot and could have gained a little more weight, although her weight was good (25%). I had major problems breastfeeding that ended up requiring surgery for me. Once we switched my daughter to formula, the vomiting increased and her weight fell. Anyway, she did end up having a milk allergy. But had I kept breastfeeding I know she would have done better. I breastfed my son for a year, and he did very well.

Jack was on TPN for two weeks when he was born while we waited for his intestines to clear of the meconium. It along with the meconium illeus caused liver problems I was told. He started on ursidol and is still on it today. Our GI doctor is not as thrilled about the ursidol/actigal. She says that while the liver enzymes numbers do fall with ursidol, the liver could still be having problems. So even though Jack's liver is the right size and his liver enzymes numbers are good, I am told he still has liver disease. Not sure I understand that, and I keep trying to get her to tell me he doesn't have it, but I am told he does. I would expect that Ashton is put on ursidol and enzymes this week, if not politely request (i.e. demand) it.
