A close family friend found out that she has COPD. She also recently started using oxygen when needed. My mommy radar is going off! I'm not sure how to handle visits from now on. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sarah

Can you ask your CF doctors whether they colonize bacteria? If so, I'd treat like CF. We have a neighbor whose son has non-CF something-er-other which put the mommy radar up too and I researched and discovered they also colonize bacteria, so we treat as if CF.
So sorry b/c I know that isn't "fair" and is really hard on you! Hugs.

We had a relative as well as a neighbor who had similar health issues and near the end, we kept DS away. For the most part they were too ill to come to our house and prior to that, at family events, DS was busy playing and off with other relatives. If they'd been around more often or in close proximity on a regular basis we would've had to rethink things. Most of our contact was outdoors at a relatives lake home or in the case of the neighbor, in his yard.

They DID ask their doctor to run a culture as they WERE concerned about DS; however, the doctor said not to worry about it because it shouldn't be an issue. Being that it was a family practice doctor in a small town clinic and KNOWING that most people with lung issues DO culture something, we didn't believe we should be complacent.

My mom had copd and was on oxygen for 5 yrs before she passed. During the last year of her life she cultured PA. My family could not comprehend the danger her infection posed to my kids. It was heat breaking. The other thing to think about is your child carrying something that could hurt the other person too.

This is a very interesting question and I personally would like to hear some answers to the question too. My best friend was recently diagnosed with COPD after years of being sick all the time. I don't see her as much as I did before having my CF baby. She now lives an hour away and we see her even less. We talk multiple times a day on the phone though. Every time we do see her we have plenty of hand sanitizer and we slather in it often! LOL
