Raspy Voice

I have a daughter with CF that will be 4 this summer. She has always had a cute little voice but lately her voice has become very raspy and deep. It has been odd and we don't like to attach everything to CF but we were wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

That's very related to CF. I used to have a pretty good singing voice, and now not so much. It's deeper, and usually raspy or not quite right. I don't think I've had my full voice available more than about a week or so in the last 6 months. I'm not usually entirely voice-less, but it's always somewhere in the middle. I have a voice, but it's raspy or deeper or "off." And as far as singing... well I only do that in my shower and in my car so people don't have to listen! Heh.

If your daughter has recently started inhaled antibiotics such as Pulmozyme or TOBI, then that could most definately be why her voice is raspy. When I started both of these, mine was that way & it did lessen quite a bit over time.It also may be par for the course to have a raspy voice, next time you take her to the Dr, (or before if it's really bothering you), ask the Dr what they think is the cause.

She is not taking any antibiotics, but I will definitely mention it at our next clinic visit in a couple of weeks.

PS-- Pulmozyme is not always an antibiotic, I've been on it constantly for 11 years. But yeah those can be a bitch on both breath and voice.

Yeah, Pulmozyme is not an antiobiotic. But, about the voice, my Dad has always claimed that when I am getting sick my voice changes, gets raspy, and he is right. Sometimes I get to the point that I whisper because it is easier than trying to get the words out loudly.

I do not have CF but lose my voice quite a bit. My doc told me that when you are starting to get raspy is is worse on your vocal cords to whisper than try and speak loudly. It puts more strain on the cords. It can damage the cords to try and whisper. I know, doesn't make much sense, but that is what she told me. Please keep in mind next time you are getting raspy.29 yr w/ocftwo siblings w/cf
